The Central Business District (CBD) pushcart operators who persist in blocking public areas have received a severe warning from Accra Mayor Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who has urged them to stop operating on the streets right once.

During a surprise visit to the central business district on Monday, the mayor issued a warning to the pushcart drivers as part of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s (AMA) continuous attempts to implement its decongestion order and bring peace back to the city center.

During the visit, the Mayor and the AMA Special Task Force noticed that several pushcart drivers were on the streets, operating in blatant disregard for the Assembly’s “Red Line Policy.” They promptly gave them the order to leave the street and warned them not to do so.

The mayor emphasized in his address the risks to pedestrians and drivers caused by unlicensed street trade and the improper use of pushcarts in crowded locations.

“I want to send a strong message to all pushcart operators—leave the streets. Or we will move you,” he stated firmly. “We are doing this to protect lives and make Accra a safer and cleaner city. If you continue to flout the rules, we will have no choice but to arrest and prosecute offenders.”

While the AMA was open to discussion, Mayor Allotey emphasized that the Assembly would not accept any actions that jeopardize public safety or impede movement in the capital. He also stated that the Assembly would not be afraid to take firm measures against anyone who refuse to comply.

He urged all business owners and transportation providers to follow the Assembly’s instructions and back the decongestion plan, which aims to make Accra a more orderly and livable city.

The Mayor’s surprise visit is a component of the AMA’s larger plan to step up enforcement and maintain the progress achieved through its sanitation and decongestion initiatives.
