The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Mion Constituency in Ghana’s Northern Region, Sulaiman Abubakar, has resigned from his position with immediate effect.

Mr. Abubakar announced his resignation in a statement dated Saturday, August 8, 2026, explaining that his decision was based on personal reasons.

In his resignation letter addressed to the NPP Northern Regional Chairman, he formally notified the party of his decision to step down as Mion Constituency Chairman effective August 8, 2026.

He expressed appreciation to the party’s Council of Elders, Patrons, polling station executives, electoral area executives, party members and supporters within the constituency for the confidence they placed in him during his tenure.

The resignation comes less than a month after the New Patriotic Party held its constituency-level elections, raising attention within the local NPP leadership in the Northern Region.

Mr. Abubakar’s resignation is expected to trigger discussions over the next steps for the party’s leadership in the Mion Constituency, as the NPP continues efforts to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of future elections.

The development adds to ongoing political developments within Ghana’s major political parties as they reorganise their constituency and regional structures.
