The Ghana Muslim Forum for Peace and Unity (GMFPU) has condemned the Founder and Leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry International, Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, over what it described as renewed and unwarranted attacks against former Vice President and NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
In a statement dated September 9, 2026, and signed by the forum’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Zakari Abdul Rahman, the group expressed concern over comments allegedly made by Rev. Owusu Bempah during a church service on Sunday, September 6.
Muslim Forum Raises Concerns Over Bawumia Comments
According to the GMFPU, Rev. Owusu Bempah threatened to spiritually end Dr. Bawumia’s political career if individuals he identified as the former Vice President’s communicators continued responding to him.
The forum also accused the pastor of alleging that Dr. Bawumia and members of the NPP Nasara Wing were planning an attack on his church.
The Muslim group said the latest comments were part of a pattern of statements it considers divisive and potentially harmful to Ghana’s longstanding reputation for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
Previous Comments on Bawumia and NPP
The GMFPU also referred to an earlier statement allegedly made by Rev. Owusu Bempah on August 9, 2026.
The forum said the pastor had declared that he would curse people who vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and argued that Dr. Bawumia would not become President of Ghana because, in his view, a Muslim should not lead a country with a Christian majority.
The Muslim Forum described such comments as a threat to Ghana’s Christian-Muslim unity and religious harmony.
“This continuous display of bitterness is bigger than politics. It is an attack on the very peace and unity that Ghana is celebrated for.”
Ghana’s Religious Tolerance
The GMFPU stressed that Ghana has long been recognised for religious tolerance, with Christians and Muslims living together, working together, intermarrying and contributing to national development.
The forum argued that political disagreements should not be turned into religious divisions or used to undermine the peaceful relationship between Ghana’s major faith communities.
It also said Dr. Bawumia’s political rise contradicts the religious argument being attributed to Rev. Owusu Bempah.
Christians Supported Bawumia in NPP Presidential Race
According to the forum, Dr. Bawumia secured the NPP presidential nomination because the majority of party delegates, many of whom are Christians, supported him based on his competence and leadership qualities.
The group further referenced the 2024 general election, claiming that Dr. Bawumia received the support of about 42% of Ghanaian voters, many of whom were Christians.
The forum said the voting pattern demonstrated that Ghanaians can support political candidates based on their leadership credentials rather than their religious background.
Forum Rejects Claim Over Ghana Presidency
The GMFPU also rejected the alleged assertion that Dr. Bawumia cannot become President of Ghana without Rev. Owusu Bempah’s approval.
The forum described the claim as an unacceptable threat and insisted that political leadership and sovereignty ultimately belong to God.
To support its position, the group cited Qur’an 3:26, Psalm 75:6-7 and Daniel 2:21, which it said affirm that authority, promotion and kingship come from God.
Call for Peace and Interfaith Dialogue
The Ghana Muslim Forum for Peace and Unity urged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to remain calm and avoid responding to what it described as provocative statements.
The group also encouraged the NPP flagbearer to continue promoting religious diversity, tolerance and interfaith dialogue.
The forum warned against attempts to use religion to deepen political divisions, stressing that Ghana’s Christian-Muslim unity remains more important than individual political disagreements.
It concluded by calling for responsible public discourse and continued efforts to protect Ghana’s reputation as a country where people of different faiths can coexist peacefully.
