Former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership contest, receiving the mandate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections with 110,643 votes, or 56.48% of all ballots cast.

Dr. Bawumia won a resounding majority in the national presidential primary, defeating numerous well-known candidates. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong received 46,554 votes (23.76%), while former Minister of Food and Agriculture and Abetifi MP, Dr Bryan Acheampong, received 36,303 votes (18.53%). Former Minister of Education and Bosomtwi MP Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum received 1,999 votes (1.02%), while former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong received 402 votes (0.21%).

After winning, Dr. Bawumia thanked party delegates for their faith in him and promised to bring the party together before the 2028 elections.

He emphasised that unity would be essential to the NPP’s goal of “breaking the eight” and winning a historic third consecutive term in office, and he asked his former rivals to unite around a common vision.

Party authorities praised delegates for their active involvement and commitment to the party’s internal democratic process, characterising the primary as mainly peaceful and transparent.

Following the conclusion of the flagbearership contest, the NPP is anticipated to intensify its 2024 election preparations as Dr. Bawumia starts to build support inside the party and engage the broader Ghanaian population.

Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, meantime, has acknowledged the primary’s outcome, saying he was prepared for either outcome.

“I am a veteran politician, so I know,” Agyapong stated in a speech to supporters on Saturday, January 31, 2026. “I have gone through several defeats, so I cushion myself and expected the worst, and the worst has happened, but the worst doesn’t mean that is the end of life.”

“So keep faith alive and be happy with the outcome. Who knows what will happen tomorrow, the delegates have spoken, and we have to take it. We don’t know what is in store for us tomorrow.”

He expressed gratitude to his campaign team and urged them to maintain optimism.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank Team Ken for the wonderful work you’ve done. We all admit we worked hard, but God’s time is the best. He knows what is good for us. I know most of you are dejected; you have to keep your spirit up because once we have life, we have everything. I have taken it coolly because in politics you can win, you can lose,” he remarked.

Agyapong also cautioned against making divisive comments and emphasised the need of maintaining party unity.
