As part of the Ghana Smart Schools Project, which was introduced in Accra on Monday, March 25, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo revealed intentions to provide smart tablets to 1.3 million Senior High School (SHS) pupils nationally.
The effort is in line with the government’s objective to improve education through technology by providing students covered by the free SHS policy with fundamental technological skills.
In order to improve the educational possibilities and learning environment for children across the nation, President Akufo-Addo also declared that some 100 smart SHSs will be built over the course of the next two years.
Under the Ghana Smart Schools Project, each tablet will have digital content installed to support teaching, learning, and research. Students will have one-to-one access to these devices.
In order to support academic endeavors, the government also intends to provide tertiary students and instructors with inexpensive tablets and laptops.
“At the tertiary level, Ghana is pleased to provide at a discounted price tablets and laptops to students and lecturers to facilitate academic[s]”, the president said, adding: “The government continues to seek innovative ways to do STEM and the FSHS policy.”
“The next phase of FSHS policy enhancement will be propelled by digitalisation. This will allow a seamless online and offline teaching and learning experience,” he said.
Education Minister Yaw Osei Adutwum emphasized the significance of making sure no child is left behind while reiterating the government’s commitment to expanding education in spite of economic difficulties at the same event.
He emphasized the commitment of the government to education, pointing out that strong educational foundations are prioritized by visionary leadership in order to ensure future economic resiliency.
