An armed robbery attempt against passengers on two sprinter buses on the Kumasi–Bibiani route was successfully foiled by the Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol Team on the evening of June 2, 2025, at around 1730 hours.
According to a news release from the Ashanti Regional Police Command, five armed attackers with a pump-action shotgun seized the two cars at gunpoint and began plundering the occupants.
In a statement signed by DSP Godwin Ahianyo of the Public Affairs Unit, it was said that the suspect with the pump-action weapon opened fire on the police officers after the patrol team’s timely arrival interrupted the criminal activity.
A medical official at the Afari Government Hospital declared one of the attackers dead after the officers swiftly returned fire and fatally wounded him.
According to the statement, the other four suspects have since left the area and are still at large.
The escaping suspects may have been shot, according to the authorities.
Therefore, the police are urging all healthcare facilities and professionals to be on the lookout and notify the closest police station of anyone exhibiting gunshot wounds.
The deceased’s remains have been placed in the morgue of the Afari Government Hospital for preservation and additional examination.
