Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo has been formally instructed by President John Mahama to provide a preliminary response to three petitions demanding her dismissal from office within ten days.

Three people filed the petitions on February 14 and March 17, 2025, alleging wrongdoing and abuse of authority.

The Secretary to the President, Callistus Mahama, signed a letter outlining the directive.

As required by Article 146(6) of the Constitution, the President first sent the petitions to Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Council of State, for deliberation. This was the first step in the constitutional process.

On March 27, 2025, the Council of State granted its approval, and the petitions were then forwarded to the Chief Justice for her feedback.

President Mahama, however, voiced his alarm about a March 27, 2025, letter from Chief Justice Torkonoo that was leaked and went viral on social media before he had a chance to read it.

The President underlined the importance of expertise and due process when dealing with such delicate issues.

The President will decide on the matter’s next course of action after the Chief Justice has ten days to reply.
