The government’s efforts to regulate telecom prices for the benefit of consumers will result in lower data costs.

Samuel Nartey George, the Minister of Communications and Digitalization, declared that the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has given its approval for the implementation of new telecom rates in the industry.

He underlined that a considerable drop in data bundle costs will result from the imposition of these prices throughout the telecom sector.

During a news briefing on July 3, 2025, the Minister made these statements when talking about the Ministry’s performance thus far.

He claims that he received a briefing on July 3, 2025, regarding the technical paperwork and preparedness to finish the procedures required to implement the new tariffs, which will offer consumers value for their money in terms of data services.

“We’ve had meetings. I had a meeting with the executive secretary of the PURC. It was very fruitful,” he said.

Mr. George clarified that the technical documentation required to support the new tariff structure has been provided by Ghana Telecom, Helios, and ATC, the nation’s three tower firms.

According to him, his ministry will send the paperwork to the PURC for the last procedures with a cover note attached.

“Today, this morning, I have just received, before coming in here, from the chairperson of the Chamber of Telecoms all the technical documentation that is needed to help the PURC,” he reiterated.

He emphasized that power is a significant cost component for telecom businesses because all cell sites run on electricity and that if the telecom tariff is adopted, it will cut the cost of power and the cost buildup of telecommunications by a certain amount.

“And I’m confident that in Q3, we’ll be able to have some fruitful movement on the telecom tariff,” he added.

The Minister also said that agreements have been made with all telecom CEOs to guarantee that any decrease in telecom tariffs will be passed on to consumers in the form of lower data bundle costs.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) will enforce compliance if any company violates this agreement, he stressed.

He also mentioned continuing discussions with the Finance Ministry about potential tax handles that could be eliminated to further reduce consumer cost, adding that data pricing could be automatically affected by the simplification of VAT calculations.
