Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is chosen by Mahama for the 2024 election

Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has been selected by opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to be his running mate for the December 7 election.

In the 2020 election, former President John Dramani Mahama’s running mate was Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a former minister of education.

Prior to her nomination as the running mate, a number of names were rumored to be among Mr. Mahama’s options. These included the former Chief of Staff to President Mahama, Julius Debrah; Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, MP for Korle Klottey; Dr. Nii Moi Thompson, an economist; Eric Opoku, a member of parliament for Asunafo; and retired Police Commissioner, Nathan Kofi Boakye.

On February 27, 2024, John Mahama formally presented the party’s Council of Elders with his running partner candidacy.

In a statement released and bearing the signature of Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the party, it was stated that Article 45 of the NDC Constitution governed the nominating procedure.

Furthermore, Mr. Kwetey disclosed that the party’s Council of Elders will convene on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. to discuss the nomination.

In addition, the nomination will be discussed further in the National Executive Committee meeting that same day at 3 p.m.

He promised that everyone who was interested would be informed as soon as more information about the meetings became available.

“The NDC is confident that the Running Mate will bring a wealth of experience, expertise, and dedication to our campaign,” Mr. Kwetey said, expressing confidence in the selection of the running partner.

He stated that while they work together to “Build the Ghana We Want together,” the choice of running partner will be in line with John Mahama’s vision.

Mr. Kwetey restated the party’s resolve to put in unceasing effort toward the advancement and constructive transformation of the nation.

“We express our sincere gratitude to our supporters for their steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment. Together, let us join hands and embark on this journey towards a brighter future for Ghana,” he reiterated.
