President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been urged by certain local religious leaders to urgently outlaw unlawful small-scale mining (galamsey).

These religious leaders assert that illicit miners’ activities have completely drained the nation’s water resources, including the reservoirs that go along with them.

Religious leaders who were concerned about the activities of illegal miners indicated that outlawing all forms of mining will go a long way toward restoring sanity in galamsey enclaves during a meeting with the President on November 1, 2022, at the Jubilee House.

Speaking on behalf of the clergy, Rt. Rev. Professor Joseph Obiri Mante, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, bemoaned the difficulty in distinguishing between small-scale mining and galamsey.

We simply question if it will be possible to outlaw all small scale mining because we are unable to distinguish which miners who were previously legal have now turned out to be unlawful, which ones are galamsey, and so on. We know we receive money (from galamsey), but at what cost? he declared during the meeting.

Unsavory practices carried out by illegal miners in the nation have gained attention, and several Ghanaians are urging the President to control these operations.
