Mr. Sam Nartey George, Ghana’s Minister of Communications and Digitalization, has sharply criticized DStv Ghana’s pricing policies, saying the corporation is failing to take Ghanaians seriously and puts profit before equity.
The Minister responded to DStv Ghana’s public statement by saying that the company’s actions confirm his earlier worries about its disrespect for Ghanaian customers.
He drew attention to the difference between DStv’s Ghanaian response and its prompt adherence to regulatory requirements in Nigeria, where a parliamentary intervention resulted in the postponement of comparable pricing increases.
“In Nigeria, when authorities acted, DStv complied and reversed their price increases,” he gave this response in a Facebook post on Sunday.
“Here in Ghana, despite more favourable economic indicators, including a 10% cedi appreciation, a 5% drop in inflation, and falling fuel prices, they still went ahead with a 15% increase in April,” the Minister said.
Additionally, Mr. Sam George disclosed a different proposal from DStv, which he categorically refused. The corporation proposed, the Minister said, that it would not repatriate the revenue to its headquarters while keeping the membership fees as high as they are.
“That offer lacks any logic,” he said. “The issue is the exorbitant pricing itself, not where the money goes.”
The Minister called the offer “disconnected from the real concerns of Ghanaians” and emphasized that his stance is motivated by a dedication to economic justice and fairness for customers.
“There has been a RESET,” he said, “and it demands a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the Ghanaian people.”
“I remain open to constructive engagements, but only those centered on price reduction. Anything else is tangential and of no consequence,” he stressed.
He urged local DStv employees to support national objectives and the larger demand for equitable treatment, while also expressing empathy for them.
Amid mounting worries about the strains of Ghana’s cost of living, the Communications Ministry’s position indicates a stronger regulatory posture in support of fair market practices and consumer rights.
