The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have issued a strong warning, warning against any additional violence that would be met with the appropriate punishment, in response to recent attacks on its installations and people.
This announcement follows a sad altercation that took place on Saturday between Tema New Town teenagers and naval personnel, which claimed two lives.
The incident took place on Friday, April 12, 2024, in the evening during a street procession that the youth had prepared as a component of the yearly Kplejoo celebration. When the young person arrived to the street in front of the Eastern military Command, tensions between them and the military ratings who were on duty erupted.
When a group of people apparently targeted an Eastern Naval Command truck and seriously damaged it, the scene became more heated.
Three navy personnel were inside the car when this happened, and they were immediately transferred to the Tema Naval Base Medical Center for treatment after suffering serious injuries.
After the vehicular assault, a mob continued their attack, causing property damage at the Tema Naval Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema New Town. The GAF sent its condolences to the families of the departed and warned the young people of Tema that they would not be allowed to assault their men or sites again.
The chronology of events was provided in a statement issued by GAF Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie.
The GAF and the Ghana Police Service have begun looking into the event; the results will be released when they are available.
In the statement, it was also requested that everyone remain composed while the investigation was underway.
The Ghana Armed Forces emphasize that any more acts of hostility will be handled with the appropriate response and that they remain steadfast in their commitment to safeguarding its people and installations.
