An open-ended nationwide strike has been declared by the Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Ghana, with effect from today, Friday, September 19, 2025.

King James Azortibah, the union’s general secretary, signed a statement directing all of its members nationwide to refrain from working until further notice.

Employees of public and technical universities, the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ghana Library Authority (GLA), and the Ghana Museum and Monuments Board (GMMB) are all affected by the strike.

TEWU clarified that the strike was unavoidable because of what it called the government’s and employer institutions’ ongoing inability to resolve the long-standing issues of non-teaching employees.

The union claims that before going on strike, it had tried every legal and procedural option.

The resolution of promotion-related grievances, the immediate signing of conditions of service for its members, the completion of stalled negotiations with the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission, and the payment of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance for GES non-teaching staff in September 2025 are some of the demands made by TEWU.

Employers were cautioned by the union against victimizing or intimidating its members in any way, calling such behavior unfair labor practices.

It further emphasized that by adhering to due process as specified in Ghana’s Labour Act, it had demonstrated tolerance and restraint.

TEWU blamed the government and its agencies for the interruptions in the education sector, claiming that they had ignored repeated concerns.

It is anticipated that the strike will impact services in libraries and museums across the country, as well as teaching and learning in colleges and universities.
