The Akuapem South parliamentary primaries, which were originally set for Saturday, January 27, 2024, have been rescheduled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The party announced that the decision was made “in response to petitions received, accompanied by recommendations from both the constituency executive committee and the regional executive committee” in a statement that was signed by Justin Kodua Frimpong, the general secretary.
The executives asked the National Executive Committee to investigate a petition that local MCE Frank Aidoo had submitted, alleging that Osei Bonsu Amoah, the sitting MP, had resigned from the campaign in order to deny him the opportunity to run and give his assistant an unfair advantage.
MMDCEs are prohibited from running against sitting Members of Parliament (MPs) in the party’s parliamentary primaries guidelines unless the MP chooses not to run again or the DCE/MCE resigns two years prior to elections.
Citing personal concerns, Mr. OB Amoah withdrew from the campaign two days earlier.
Given this context, NPP Eastern Regional Secretary Tony Osei-Agyei declared that the party will think about fielding MCE Frank Aidoo in the later-scheduled primaries.
On the other hand, the statement states that the purpose of the postponement is to guarantee thorough consultations and resolve any issues expressed.
