The National Broiler Project, a spin-off of the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Initiative, is progressively taking shape with the implementation of a poultry processing pilot program.

Since December 2025, over 100,000 birds have been treated as part of the trial program by three companies.

During a tour to Aglow Farms in Gomoa Potsin, Central Region, yesterday, Mr Kelvin Ocran, National Coordinator of the National Broiler Project Directorate at the Ministry of Special Initiatives, Office of the President, stated that the goal was to process 18 million birds in 2019.

He explained that the pilot had completed three phases and was now ready for full-scale launch.

“This facility can process 100,000 birds a week, and we are going to scale it up to 300,000 a week across three working shifts in line with government’s 24-hour economy policy,” he said.

With Ghana importing roughly 400,000 tonnes of processed chicken yearly, Mr Ocran said there was already an existing demand for domestically processed chicken.

He claimed that deals had been made with outgrowers to provide birds to processing companies in order to satisfy local demand.

He stated that next month’s manufacturing cycle would see the start of production for the commercial market.

As part of the project’s value chain, Mr. Ocran continued, cold storage facilities were also being created.

He added as part of the marketing approach, a module had been built to allow corporate personnel to acquire processed chicken under deferred payment conditions.

He anticipated that hundreds of thousands of direct and indirect jobs would be produced under the project.

Nana Boakye, Executive Director of Aglow Farms and Team Lead for the Broiler Project, stated that although his company presently processes 1.5 million birds a year, the effort may triple output.

Mr. Boakye stated that when the project is fully operational in the upcoming months, the facility’s present workforce of 500 people across the value chain is anticipated to triple.

“When it comes to broiler production, Aglow Farms is at the forefront. Early last year, we opened our own retail outlet, so this programme will be a feather in our cap, enabling us to produce more for the open market,” he reiterated.
