Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the health minister, has cautioned that Ghana’s economy could become seriously unstable if the expectations listed in the conditions of service for nurses and midwives are fully implemented.
His warning coincides with a statewide walkout by Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) members calling for prompt action to improve working conditions.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Akandoh emphasized the economic difficulties associated with the existing measures while reiterating the government’s willingness to engage in talks.
He said, “The government will again stress its readiness to further engage with the view of implementing the conditions of service in a manner that does not dislocate the national budget.”
He added that the national financial plan did not account for the suggested benefits.
“We wish to draw attention to the fact that the conditions under reference are not captured in the 2025 budget and will completely throw the economy off gear if implemented immediately in the manner it currently exists.”
Akandoh emphasized that the administration understands the dangers of impulsive expenditure.
“We are mindful of the serious economic consequences of unbudgeted expenditure, and we want to avoid the economic factors that led to the crisis in the first place,” he added.
Many public health institutions are currently running with fewer staff members due to the ongoing strike’s disruption of health services nationwide.
The minister urged the GRNMA’s leadership to get back to the negotiating table and try to reach an agreement.
