President John Dramani Mahama announced that the government will start the first phase of the Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam Project, a significant infrastructure project that is expected to cost close to $1 billion.

The project will be carried out in two stages, President Mahama said during a courtesy visit by the Upper East Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday, February 10.

Hydropower production will be the main focus of the first phase, and irrigation development will be the main focus of the second.

“The Pwalugu Multipurpose Dam is a major project, so we are adopting a phased approach. The first phase involves preparing the site for the dam to produce electricity. The hydropower component is expected to generate between 60 and 70 megawatts. There is also a solar component designed to produce an additional 30 to 40 megawatts. Altogether, the project aims to generate over 100 megawatts to ensure economic viability,” he stated.

The second phase, he continued, will entail creating canals, setting up pumps, and getting the area ready for irrigation in order to make sure the dam meets both agricultural and energy demands.
