As the country moves toward electric vehicle transportation, the government has pushed the business sector to invest in solar-powered electric charging stations.

The country prioritised solar-powered energy systems, but Joyce Caitlyn Ocansey, the Programme Coordinator of the Drive Electric Programme of the Energy Commission (EC), who provided the advice, emphasised that the government remained committed to letting the private sector lead the EV charging system.

She was giving a speech at the commission’s stakeholder awareness and sensitisation event on the Electric Vehicle Charging System and Swap System Regulation 2026, which was hosted at the Sunyani Technical University’s (STU) Centre of Excellence in Sunyani.

Mrs Ocansey stated that the government preferred solar-powered EV charging stations since they were cleaner, encouraged the sustainable energy industry, and helped the country meet its climate obligations.

As the EC plans to teach trained wiring professionals, electricians, and installers, the EV industry would not only promote cleaner, more sustainable energy but also generate jobs.

According to Mrs. Ocansey, 17 million cars, or 20% of all cars sold worldwide in 2024, were electric vehicles (EVs); just 1% of these cars were sold in Africa.

However, Mrs. Ocansey stated that the country was making headway in switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy, pointing out that as electric battery charging stations proliferated, investments in the EV sector were more promising.

The STU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Evans Zoya Kpamma, called the sensitisation “helpful” and asked the country to take more significant steps to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

He called for increased investment in the country’s renewable energy sector, stated that the STU Center of Excellence was open to private-sector partnerships, and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to advancing the EV industry in the country.

The motorbike battery swap systems and four EV charging models were demonstrated to the participants.
