Dr. John Kwakye, Director of Research at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), has warned of potential food price increases in the country.

He blamed the food inflation on Russia’s decision to restrict Ukraine’s grain supplies, and warned people to expect to spend more for food in the following days.

He also bemoaned the country’s inability to produce enough food to meet its need. On June 18, 2023, he tweeted, “Ghana must brace itself for even higher food prices as Ukrainian grain supplies are once again restricted.” It is sad that we are unable to produce enough local food to minimize food inflation, which surpassed 54% in June, and the overall expense of life.”
