Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, the Interior Minister, has been called by Parliament to address the House tomorrow, March 25, 2025, to inform members of the events that led to the search of Dr. Ernest Addison’s home, the former governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), last Wednesday, March 19, 2025.
During his presentation of the Business Statement for the next week on the floor of Parliament on Friday, George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, made this announcement.
“Mr Speaker, the Business Committee has scheduled the Minister for the Interior to brief the House on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, on the circumstances leading to the raid of the residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19, 2025,” he said.
“Honourable Members are to take note and avail themselves for the briefing on the said date,” the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast South said.
Last Wednesday morning, some armed guys claiming to be security personnel broke into Dr. Addison’s home in Roman Ridge and searched a purported vault for cash.
Following the event, the Minority in Parliament condemned what they called a pattern of illegal raids targeting former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s appointments at a press conference held at Parliament House last Thursday.
Speaking during the news conference, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin recalled a previous instance in which a similar raid had been carried out on another prominent former official.
“First was a raid on the home of the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, led by Richard Jakpa, a known NDC activist, who describes himself as Director of Operations at the National Security,” he said.
“This Rambo-style approach must cease,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin said, adding that the way these raids were carried out infringed on the rights of the people concerned.
Some government officials, such as Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, the Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, have stated since the incident that the search was carried out at the former Governor of the BoG’s private residence as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of state assets.
He claimed that the operation, which happened last Wednesday, was lawfully conducted with a legitimate warrant.
“We take full responsibility for these searches, and I can confirm they were conducted in accordance with legal procedures,” he said.
In addition to presenting the Business Statement, Mr. Ricketts-Hagan announced that on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the current Governor of the BoG, will brief the House on the events that led to the failure of certain banks and other financial institutions for its consideration.
In light of this, Habib Iddrisu, the First Deputy Minority Chief Whip and New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Tolon, advised the House to specify which banks and financial institutions the Governor of the Bank of Ghana would be speaking about, as some of these banks were involved in legal proceedings.
In response to his worries, the Deputy Majority Leader stated that the BoG Governor’s briefing was intended to inform MPs, who were the people’s representatives, and not to damage the cases.
