Mahama Ayariga, the majority leader, has reiterated the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) steadfast stance on the Anti-Gay Bill, saying that the party’s attitude hasn’t changed since the elections.

He made these comments in reaction to President John Dramani Mahama’s recent assertion that the present Private Member’s law might not be as effective as a government-sponsored law.

President Mahama contended that doing so would facilitate more extensive consultations and contribute to the development of a more robust national consensus on the matter.

President Mahama also emphasized the need to update the curriculum to include moral and cultural education in order to promote Ghanaian and African values among young students during a meeting with the Bishops on Tuesday, January 14.

Mahama Ayariga explained that agreements or legislative initiatives that are not completed within the tenure of a certain Parliament are typically regarded as having expired, as is the president’s administration in which they were initiated.

He dismissed any indication that the NDC’s stance had changed and reaffirmed the party’s unwavering support for the Anti-Gay Bill.

“No, there has been no change in our stance. The question now is whether we can simply sign and pass it into law. Would it be recognised as proper legislation, or might the process be challenged on the grounds that its validity expired with the previous Parliament?” he stressed.

On Monday, January 27, he was interviewed by Channel One TV in Accra.
