Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, filed a substantive claim against Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Attorney-General.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to render its decision on Tuesday, November 12, 2024.
Speaker Bagbin’s statement of case was not filed, and Thaddeus Sory, the Speaker of Parliament’s attorney, failed to show up for court on Monday, November 11.
Chief Justice Getrude Torkonoo stated, “I quote, the judgment of this matter will be delivered tomorrow, November 12, 2024.”
After the Speaker declared four parliamentary seats vacant, Afenyo-Markin filed a writ to obtain a proper interpretation of Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution.
The announcement followed the filing of nominations by one member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus and two members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus to run as independent candidates in the parliamentary election scheduled for December 7.
On the NPP’s ticket, one independent MP had also submitted an application.
Additionally, Afenyo-Markin is asking the Supreme Court to prevent Parliament from taking any action about the four MPs’ eligibility.
