The end of April 2025 is the deadline for traders on the Kaneshie footbridge to leave the region.
Following a combined inspection exercise by the Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly (ACMA), the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in the Greater Accra Region, the directive was issued.
The inspection, which took place on Wednesday, was intended to evaluate the state of the capital’s decaying footbridges, paying special attention to the Kaneshie Market neighborhood, which is one of Accra’s biggest business districts.
After the examination, Douglas N.K. Annoful, the AMA’s Coordinating Director, expressed doubts over the Kaneshie footbridge’s structural soundness.
He pointed out that safety concerns were being raised by the hawkers’ and traders’ ongoing possession of the bridge, which was further taxing the already fragile framework.
According to Mr. Annoful, the AMA had previously attempted to move the dealers to safer and more suitable trading areas, but little compliance had been shown.
He underlined that pedestrian safety must come first and issued a dire warning that the April 2025 deadline would be closely adhered to in order to avert any possible mishaps.
According to authorities, the footbridge’s evacuation is a component of a larger strategy to guarantee the security and structural upkeep of the city’s vital infrastructure.
