The Ama Ata Aidoo literary legend has passed away, and the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) has expressed its sorrow.

The group paid tribute to the author in a statement, describing her as “an accomplished Ghanaian author, playwright, and poet.”

The organisation added, “Prof. served as the Secretary for Education (the position is now known as the Minister of Education) in 1982 under the PNDC regime in addition to being a Ghanaian literary powerhouse and a devoted patriot.

The statement continued, “Members of the Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) are in grief, over the death of the great woman, Ama Ata Aidoo.”

The president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stated that the nation would mourn the literary legend who passed away on May 31, 2023.

After a brief illness, the literary giant passed away at age 81.

President Akufo-Addo expressed his regret and sorrow upon learning of her passing in a Facebook post, writing: “I heard of the news of Ama Ata Aidoo’s death.

I send her children and family my sincere condolences for their tragic loss.

“She was my contemporary at the University of Ghana, someone with whom I enjoyed friendly and productive relations,” President Akufo-Addo said.

He pointed out that the literary legend significantly aided Ghana’s progress through her writing.

“Ama Ata Aidoo was a notable writer from Ghana and a leading figure in her generation. She made a significant contribution to the advancement of our nation and continent through her work and articulated many of our sentiments over our lot as Ghanaians and, more broadly, as Africans, he added.

He added that everyone will miss the deceased writer because of his influence that extended beyond Ghana.

“We, the continent, and the entire globe will miss her. She had a reach that extended beyond Ghana, according to Mr. Akufo-Addo.
