A total of 483,800 candidates who took the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) were accepted into technical and vocational institutions (TVIs), senior high schools (SHSs), and senior high technical schools (SHTS).

Out of the 603,328 students that took the test this year, the figure represents 82% of the 590,309 candidates who are eligible for placement.

Women currently make up 248,038 of the total, or 51.4% of the students who have already been placed.

At a press conference yesterday in Accra, Deputy Minister of Education Dr. Clement Abas Apaak revealed that 107,509 applicants, or 18.2% of all eligible pupils, were not matched with their first school preferences because of the high demand for specific Category A schools.

The deputy minister responded to this by stating that the self-placement portal had been made available for all eligible applicants who were not placed automatically to access and choose among schools that had openings.

He added that the Free SHS Program was piloting 70 private SHSs this year, all of which were now reachable via the portal, giving students additional options. “The private schools that have agreed to participate will receive government support equivalent to the fees incurred for students enrolling in public institutions,” he declared.

Apart from the 70 private SHSs, the placement program encompasses 233 technical and vocational institutes, 724 public SHSs, and SHTS.

Dr. Apaak declared that resolution centers had been established at the district, regional, and national levels to lessen the burden on parents and guardians.

The national resolution center is located in the GNAT Hall in Accra.

He advised parents and guardians not to pay anyone for placement, whether it be a third-party agent or a representative of a state agency.

“Let me take this opportunity to strongly reiterate that placement is absolutely free. The Ministry of Education cautions that anyone soliciting payment must be reported immediately to the nearest police station or to the Office of the Special Prosecutor.”

“Whether placed directly or through the self-placement portal, you have a clear and secure pathway to continue your education. Let us, as parents, teachers, and communities, support our students and ensure that this placement exercise contributes to their success and to Ghana’s progress,” Dr. Apaak stated.

In this year’s BECE, 603,328 candidates from 20,395 schools and 2,237 testing locations—297,250 men and 306,078 women—wrote the exam.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced the 2025 BECE results in August of this year, with over 600,000 pupils eligible for placement in technical, vocational, and senior high schools.

The results of about 600,000 applicants who took the test were made public by WAEC, with the exception of 177 candidates whose results were canceled due to misconduct and 718 others whose subject results were also canceled.

Additionally, the council withheld 1,240 candidates’ topic results and the full results of 93 candidates.

Additionally, some applicants from 119 schools had their subject results canceled, while some candidates from 87 schools had their subject results detained for additional examination.
