Over 2,500 scholarships will be given out this year to Ghanaian and ECOWAS students, according to the government, and the complete list of recipients will be made public starting on October 1, 2025.
The revelation comes after Ghana’s tribute to the 50th anniversary of ECOWAS; President John Dramani Mahama promised in April 2025 to provide 1,000 scholarships to university students in the ECOWAS subregion.
At a news conference called the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Monday, September 15, 2025, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, provided an explanation.
More than 2,500 scholarships are now available, he said, since the program has subsequently grown to include more grants for Ghanaian students.
“Over 2,500 scholarships have been secured for Ghanaian students and our brothers and sisters from the ECOWAS sub-region this year. For the first time, a full list of awardees will be published online from October 1 to guarantee fairness and accountability,” Mr. Ablakwa said.
He clarified that in keeping with President Mahama’s goal of matching education to the needs of the nation’s growth, the scholarships will be awarded in fields including technology, engineering, medicine, and agriculture.
“The days when access to scholarships was shrouded in secrecy are over. Every Ghanaian will be able to go online and see who has benefited and the course of study. This openness is necessary if we are to build public trust,” the minister continued.
By providing possibilities for students from all across West Africa to study in Ghana and Ghanaian students to take advantage of opportunities in other member nations, Mr. Ablakwa said the program also promotes ECOWAS integration.
“This is about strengthening regional solidarity and preparing a new generation of skilled Africans who can contribute to our shared progress,” he added.
