The official rebranding of Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen’s Movement for Change as the United Party (UP) is a significant move in his campaign to run for president of Ghana outside of the country’s established two-party system.

At a vibrant ceremony in Accra on Thursday, former Trade and Industry Minister Mr. Kyerematen unveiled the rebranding. He also presented a daring growth plan called “Vision 2040” under the Paradise Project.

He stated that by 2040, the goal of the program is to make Ghana the continent’s economic superpower.

“The vision of the United Party is to make Ghana the economic powerhouse of Africa by 2040,” Mr. Kyerematen declared. “By 2040, if the people of Ghana, by the grace of God, give us the mandate, Ghana will become a powerful nation. But can you achieve that if you are divided? No. Can you achieve that without peace? No.”

He underlined that the United Party’s growth ideology is built on the principles of peace, unity, and inclusion. He claims that a privileged few have benefited greatly from Ghana’s post-independence progress, a cycle that the UP hopes to halt by guaranteeing equal opportunity for all citizens.

“What we have been witnessing since independence is that opportunities are open for only a few people. The United Party is going to change that. It is to provide the opportunity for every citizen to realize their full,” he stated.

The butterfly served as the emblem for the Movement for Change when it was first started by Mr. Kyerematen, who left the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2023 because to internal strife and unfair treatment.

He characterises the United Party’s rebranding as the beginning of a new era of harmony and change.

Abubakar Boniface Siddique, the party’s Acting National Chairman, has, however, denied proposals to extend amnesty to former NPP members who joined Alan Kyerematen’s movement so they can rejoin the ruling party.

To thunderous applause from party members, he declared, “We were sacked from the NPP, but now they want to grant us amnesty? We will not go back.”

Mr. Siddique maintained that since there was no misconduct that called for their dismissal, the NPP had no moral basis for pardon.

“What crime did our leader commit? What crime did I commit in the NPP for you to sack me? And today you are telling me you are giving me amnesty? No way,” he demanded.

“When you divorce a woman three times in Islam, she’s no longer your wife until kingdom come,” he continued, using an example from Islamic marriage.

As it gets ready to run in the general elections of 2028 under the platform of unity, peace, and economic reform, the United Party is anticipated to launch its national mobilisation and policy engagement initiatives over the course of the following three years.
