More immunizations are required, according to the Upper East Regional Public Health Emergency Committee, to stop the anthrax disease’s quick spread.

The committee claims that it is now difficult to find the vaccination.

The committee said that although the region had sought 30,000 immunizations from Pong-Tamale during the course of the previous week, as of Monday, June 12, 2023, it had only gotten 8,000. The committee claimed that the figure was horribly insufficient and damaged the regional effort to combat the disease.

The committee further stated at a technocrat meeting conducted at the Regional Coordinating Council on Monday, June 12, 2023, that the disease was spreading at an alarming rate, resulting in a significant increase in the number of ruminant deaths over the weekend compared to the prior days.

“We stated last week that 11 livestock had died, but as of today, the number is 23 cattle. It suggests that we should step up our efforts, one committee member said.

The restriction on the movement and killing of ruminants and other similar animals was imposed by the committee, which declared it has no intention of lifting it.

“How can we discuss lifting the restriction when the numbers are rising?

Another participant added, “Let’s rather focus on how to curtail this disease rather than when we are lifting the ban.”

Thus, the committee is urging everyone to exercise caution ahead of Eid Al-Adha, especially Muslims.

Abdulai Abanga, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Binduri, where the illness was first discovered, has also acquired 5,000 doses of vaccines for the veterinary health facility and contributed GHC27,400 to the Binduri Health Directorate to aid in the region’s fight against the anthrax outbreak.

I also bought 5,000 doses of vaccines and helped the veterinary personnel with logistics, he added.

Additionally, according to sources, the government will purchase additional vaccines for the region on Monday, June 19, 2023, to help in the fight against the disease.
