The United States of America’s unilateral and unauthorised invasion of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the subsequent kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in the early hours of Saturday, January 3, 2026, have alarmed the Government of the Republic of Ghana.
Ghana vehemently opposes the unilateral use of force and denounces such actions that violate international law, the United Nations Charter, state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence.
The Ghanaian government is closely monitoring the situation in Venezuela with great concern, noting that such violations of international law, attempts to occupy foreign territory, and apparent external control of oil resources have very negative effects on international stability and the global order.
Ghana expresses grave concern over US President Donald Trump’s remarks that the US will “run” Venezuela “until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition” and that US big oil firms will be urged to “go in.”
These statements bring up memories of the colonial and imperialist periods.
They created a risky precedent for the international system. In the years following World War II, such imperial aspirations had no place.
Allowing this would seriously jeopardise the international community and threaten each nation’s sovereignty.
As a result, Ghana reiterates its dedication to the idea of self-determination and maintains the strong belief that only the Venezuelan people should have the freedom to choose their own political and democratic future.
Ghana demands that President Maduro and his spouse be released and that the situation be immediately defused.
The Ghanaian government will uphold and defend its long-standing moral stance against invasion, occupation, colonialism, apartheid, disrespect for national sovereignty, and any other violations of international law.
