All medical professionals have been urged by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to accept postings in all regions of the nation, particularly in those where they are most needed.
When Mr. Akufo-Addo brought up a problem with the rejection of medical experts to relocate to other regions of the country where the demand is greater, he made the appeal.
Speaking on Friday, June 16, at the University of Ghana’s School of Nursing and Midwifery’s 60th anniversary celebrations, he urged the staff to follow in the footsteps of their forebears who agreed to serve anywhere in the nation when the situation was even more dire than it is now.
“Our nursing and midwifery schools have a solid reputation for producing competent nurses and midwives who are in high demand around the globe.
But even after 66 years of our country, the nurse-to-population ratio is still insufficient. In several of our regions, districts, and underserved communities, particularly in the recently established regions and districts, we now lack the number of healthcare professionals with the necessary combination of skills and expertise.
“It is very upsetting when nurses reject posts. I’d want to take this opportunity to urge all health professionals to follow the admirable lead of your great-grandparents, who eagerly accepted posts in their early years at a period when the country’s infrastructure was even more precarious than it is now.
Therefore, I am fervently pleading with you to accept appointments to all regions and district hospitals where your skills are most required.
