The IGP Special Operations Team apprehended 19 people in a raid aimed at disrupting criminal networks and activities in Kumasi.
The operation, which took place on Wednesday in the Kumasi suburbs of Alaba and Thinker, concentrated on crimes like rape, robbery, theft, violent attacks on drivers and commuters, drug addiction and peddling, and the sale and possession of illicit firearms and ammunition.
Under the direction of ASP Samuel Mustapha Abenzuo and DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the team confiscated large amounts of dried leaves that were thought to contain narcotics and other substances.
“Exhibits retrieved during the operation included quantities of white substances suspected to be heroin or cocaine, dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, opioids, and other items commonly used to facilitate drug consumption,” a Police Brief stated on Thursday.
According to the report, the squad started the exercise by conducting a thorough inner-city patrol across several townships and streets, including the vicinity of Manhyia Palace.
According to the brief, the team went to Alaba and Thinker, which had been identified as hubs for drug trafficking and substance misuse in the area, based on reliable intelligence.
Officers searched store owners and passersby in a methodical manner upon arriving in an effort to find illegal substances and other contraband.
It stated that Madam Ola Ruth, a shopkeeper, was taken into custody by the team during the operation after a search of her property turned up large amounts of dried leaves that were thought to be Indian hemp.
As the exercise went on, officers came upon a group of people using illegal drugs and peddling in the same area.
According to the police brief, all suspects have been taken to the Suntreso Police District Headquarters, where they are being held pending more investigation and potential prosecution.
The relevant investigation units have received the seized exhibits for forensic examination and use as evidence.
According to the brief, “the operation was conducted in a professional and disciplined manner, with officers adhering strictly to established policing standards and protocols.”
“The IGP Special Operations Team remains resolute in its mandate to combat crime and dismantle criminal networks across the Ashanti Region.”
“Continuous patrols, intelligence gathering, and community collaboration will be intensified to sustain the gains made through such operations.”
