Three visa waiver agreements with the Maldives, Zambia, and Antigua and Barbuda have been approved by Ghana’s Cabinet, paving the way for Parliament to ratify the accords and permit travel between the nations without a visa.

This was declared in a Facebook post on April 22, 2026, by Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

He stated that following parliamentary ratification, the accords, which were made during separate diplomatic encounters, would become operative.

The agreements permit visa-free stays of up to 30 days for bearers of ordinary, service, and diplomatic passports from all four nations.

The agreements will become fully enforceable after Parliament ratifies them, according to Mr. Ablakwa.

The bilateral visa exemption agreement between the two nations was signed in March 2023.

In anticipation of Ghana’s response, the Maldives Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that it was prepared to start implementation.

Ghana formally activated the deal today, Tuesday with the assent of the Cabinet.

Following President John Dramani Mahama’s three-day state visit to Lusaka in February 2026, the Zambia accord was reached.

Mr. Ablakwa told reporters about the agreement during the visit.

All passport categories were covered by a signed Memorandum of Understanding.

In September 2025, during the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the agreement with Antigua and Barbuda was signed.

“We shall keep negotiating more Visa Waiver Agreements as we add greater value to the Ghanaian Passport,” Mr. Ablakwa wrote in his article, adding that steps would also be taken to strengthen security throughout the passport application process.

According to reports at the time of the visit to Zambia in February 2026, Ghana has completed 15 visa waiver agreements since President Mahama assumed office.

That number includes the three agreements that are pending parliamentary ratification.
