Today, Tuesday, May 5, the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the Tema West Municipal Assembly commence a joint demolition exercise aimed at unapproved structures in the Sakumo Ramsar Site’s Golf Course area.
The three-day demolition exercise is a part of the authorities’ increased attempts to restore the area’s streams’ natural flow and lessen the ongoing risk of flooding, particularly as the rainy season draws near.
According to officials, the construction of unauthorised structures on vital rivers has seriously blocked drainage routes, making flooding in nearby areas worse.
The officials claim that the exercise is a continuation of ongoing enforcement operations taken over the years to safeguard the environmentally delicate Ramsar site rather than a surprise intervention.
Encroachment of the land has persisted despite several warnings, notices, and previous demolitions, necessitating a more forceful and organised reaction.
Human activity, especially uncontrolled construction, has long threatened the Sakumo Ramsar Site, which is internationally renowned for its ecological significance.
In addition to endangering the environment, authorities have expressed worry that the growing disrespect for planning restrictions puts lives and property at risk due to flooding.
Affected property owners are being asked to comply with officials in order to prevent confrontations, and security forces are anticipated to be on the ground to maintain order throughout the demolition operation.
