The Ghanaian government has formally written to the African Union demanding that the South African xenophobic attacks on Africans be included on the agenda of the next Mid-Year Coordination Meeting, which will be attended by Heads of State and Government.

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, submitted the petition for review.

“I have the honour, on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Ghana, to respectfully submit for inclusion on the agenda of the Eighth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union, scheduled to take place from 24th to 27th June 2026, in El Alamein, Egypt, as a matter of urgent continental interest, the topic of Xenophobic Attacks in the Republic of South Africa against African Nationals,” he wrote in statement on Thursday May 7.

He went on to say that the recurrence of xenophobic incidents in the Republic of South Africa, which have unfortunately resulted in fatalities, destroyed investments, and continue to pose a serious risk to the safety and wellbeing of many African nationals residing in South Africa, continues to deeply concern the Ghanaian government.

The persistence of violent attacks on fellow Africans and other forms of xenophobia in recent years, he said, is very concerning.
