Three pharmacies have been suspended from the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) due to alleged fraudulent claims and abnormalities in service.

The Authority said in a public notice on May 14, 2026, that Desh Chemist at Amasaman along the Odumase High Street, Paramedica Pharmacy on Guggisberg Avenue in Ablekuma, and Deldem Pharma Limited at Iron City in Weija have all been placed under immediate temporary suspension.

The NHIA states that the action is the result of a routine claims verification exercise that found “material irregularities” in service transactions and claims related to the impacted facilities.

According to the NHIS Provider Service Agreement, the Authority stated that the results have aroused “reasonable suspicion of fraud and abuse.”

The three pharmacies are barred from offering services or distributing medications under the NHIS until further notice, starting on May 14, 2026.

During the suspension period, the NHIA recommended NHIS members who need pharmaceutical services to seek treatment from other qualified providers nationwide.

Additionally, the Authority sent a letter to all qualified healthcare professionals stating that it will not put up with dishonest or abusive behaviour that jeopardises the National Health Insurance Scheme’s viability.

The NHIA claims that such actions jeopardise the provision of high-quality healthcare services to members and may have a detrimental impact on the scheme’s long-term sustainability.

The Authority emphasised its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the NHIS through ongoing monitoring and verification procedures, although it did not specify how long the suspension would last.

The Authority stated that “service providers are to take further notice that a healthcare provider providing services under the National Health Insurance Scheme who defrauds or attempts to defraud the Scheme commits an offence and is liable on summary conviction to a fine or a term of imprisonment of not more than ten (10) years or both.”

The NHIA stated that it is still dedicated to guaranteeing accountability, openness, and the responsible use of public monies in providing all Ghanaians with affordable, high-quality healthcare.
