Families and government representatives met at the Accra International Airport on Wednesday afternoon (May 27, 2026) to greet the first group of 300 Ghanaians evacuated from South Africa.

At around 3:00 p.m., the evacuees, who had been stranded due to recent turmoil in portions of South Africa, landed on a chartered Ethiopian airline flight.

After weeks of uncertainty and anxiety following xenophobic attacks on Ghanaians and other African nationals in South Africa, many were spotted singing and waving Ghanaian flags as they returned home.

A government delegation led by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Minister of Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs James Gyakye-Quayson, and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Bikanyi Kuyon of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) welcomed the returnees.

Concerned family members who had been waiting for hours at Terminal Two’s arrival hall joined them, along with representatives from the Ministry, the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana Airport Company Ltd., and other security agencies.

At the arrival hall, where a brief ceremony followed, there was a palpable sense of thankfulness and enthusiasm.
