A Level 200 student’s body was found at Hutchland Beach on Friday morning, and the University of Cape Coast (UCC) has initiated an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

After police informed the university about the body’s discovery, the deceased, identified as Innocentia Atsufui Avinu, was verified as a student.

The institution is closely collaborating with the UCC District Police Command to determine the circumstances surrounding her death, according to a statement released by the Directorate of Public Affairs.

The administration stated that the Office of the Dean of Students’ Affairs, which is helping law enforcement with identifying processes and gathering pertinent data, has coordinated its reaction.

The institution claims that when authorities learned that the deceased was a UCC student, the Dean of Students was notified right away.

Additionally, officials are facilitating communication between the police and the grieving family, who came to the station on Saturday, June 13, 2026, to identify the body.

The deceased’s housemate, classmates, and the larger student body impacted by the incident are all receiving counselling and other support services, according to management.

A coroner’s form is anticipated to be obtained on Monday, June 15, 2026, prior to a post-mortem examination to ascertain the cause of death. Meanwhile, police have assumed control of the criminal investigation.

Ms. Avinu, who resided in a private hostel in Amamoma, was last seen on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at around 7:00 p.m., according to preliminary evidence.

Investigators were apparently informed by her flatmate that she got a call, left the apartment wearing casual attire, and never came back.

Both the university and the police have advised the public to refrain from disseminating unconfirmed information, cautioning that false information could impede ongoing investigations and exacerbate the grief of the bereaved family and the university community.

Acting Director of the Directorate of Public Affairs Dr Kwabena Antwi-Konadu said, “The University Management has been duly informed, and appropriate support measures are being extended to the family, the affected flatmate, colleague students and course mates during this difficult period.”

The investigation is still under progress.
