Abena Osei-Asare, Chairperson of Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), claimed that the Auditor-General recovered approximately GH¢12 billion in illegal expenditure in 2024.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Public Financial Management Compliance League Table, Madam Osei-Asare stated that in order to guarantee responsibility for the handling of public monies, the PAC had received the most recent report from the Auditor-General and would start holding public hearings on it later this year.

She stated, “We hope to sit on this later this year so the citizens know the kind of work the Auditor-General has been doing in collaboration with the PAC to recover all the funds owed to the state.”

Mrs. Osei-Asare praised the committee’s and the Auditor-General’s cooperation in ensuring financial accountability, pointing out that the recovery of prohibited spending highlights the significance of strict control of public institutions.

However, she voiced alarm about the ongoing financial irregularities found in public organisations, pointing out that many of them might have been prevented.

“Many of the irregularities are preventable. It is not the case that the laws are not adequate; they are very adequate, but compliance is weak,” she stated.

She suggested that better adherence to current public financial management laws and regulations would drastically lower infractions and protect public resources, and she urged public institutions to do so.

The Public Financial Management Compliance League Table aims to improve financial governance among state entities, increase transparency, and bolster adherence to public financial management regulations.
