A mechanical issue caused Brussels Airlines flight SN278, which was headed for Lomé, Togo, to return to Accra on Monday night, shortly after takeoff.
According to a statement from the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), neither passengers nor crew members were hurt during the safe landing of Flight SN278 at Accra International Airport (AIA).
At 6:06 p.m. local time, the aircraft took off from Accra. Nevertheless, the crew discovered an unidentified technical issue few minutes after takeoff.
The pilot made the decision to head back to Accra based on regular safety protocols.
At 6:18 p.m., the plane made a safe landing in Accra after being in the air for almost 12 minutes.
In order to give engineers time to examine the aircraft after the incident, Brussels Airlines cancelled Flight SN278 for the evening.
The GCAA emphasised that passenger safety is still a top priority and commended the flight crew for their prompt adherence to established aviation safety protocols.
The aviation authority stated that Brussels Airlines is actively investigating the precise technical cause under stringent GCAA supervision. Ground crews helped the impacted passengers in the interim.
According to the Ghana Civil Aviation (Economic) Directives, 2019, Part 2 on Consumer Protection, airline officials were providing lodging and logistical help to impacted customers, the GCAA assured the public.
The authorities tried to reassure the travelling public that Ghana’s aviation safety and security monitoring mechanisms are still strong and operational in spite of the fear.
