The August edition of the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise will take place in Accra on Saturday, August 1st, 2026, from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) would like to notify all stakeholders, traders, shop owners, transport operators, market leaders, corporate institutions, organisations, and residents.
As a result, all shops, stalls, tabletop companies, hawking, and trading activities are scheduled to be closed during the period, with the day’s activities centred on drain desilting, cleaning blocked gutters and waterways, sweeping public places, and garbage evacuation.
As part of the Assembly’s ongoing efforts to enhance environmental sanitation, safeguard public health, prevent flooding, and foster shared responsibility for keeping Accra clean, the exercise will be conducted throughout all sub-metros, electoral areas, markets, lorry parks, communities, business districts, and other public spaces within the metropolis.
By cleaning their surroundings, desilting drains, clearing frontage areas, eliminating trash, and supporting efforts to keep Accra clean, all stakeholders—traders, store owners, and residents—must actively participate in the process.
The AMA would like to emphasise that the exercise will be strictly enforced.
Those who do not participate, obstruct the exercise, or engage in trading activities during the clean-up period will be arrested, fined, prosecuted before the sanitation court, or sanctioned in accordance with the applicable bye-laws.
Therefore, in order to achieve a cleaner, healthier, and safer Accra, the AMA calls on all stakeholders to completely cooperate, keep their stores closed, and actively engage in the August National Sanitation Day clean-up activity.
