The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully contained a major diesel spillage involving a bulk fuel tanker at Odumase Afrancho near Liberty Fuel Station along the Trede Road.
The incident occurred after a Benz bulk tanker carrying approximately 13,500 litres of diesel reportedly fell on its side following a steering lock, resulting in significant fuel leakage.
The diesel tanker accident was reported at about 4:20 p.m. The BOST Fire Post responded to the emergency, with appliance DPT FS 730, led by LFM Tuffour Kwakye Eugene, arriving at the scene at approximately 5:02 p.m.
The affected truck, with registration number AS 8307-Z, was owned by Mr. Denis Konsah and driven by Mr. Awudu Ryazan. According to the fire service, the tanker sustained multiple dents to its bulk tank, leading to the diesel spillage.
Personnel from other relevant institutions also joined the emergency response. They included Chief Inspector Frank Appiah and ADO I Anang Nii Otu Solomon, Officer-in-Charge of BOST.
The emergency response team tactically controlled the situation and used firefighting foam to wash away and contain the spilled diesel, helping to reduce the risk of fire and further environmental hazards.
No casualties were recorded in the fuel tanker accident, while no salvage operation was carried out. The emergency response team concluded operations and returned to base at approximately 9:59 p.m.
The incident highlights the importance of road safety, fuel tanker maintenance and effective emergency response to prevent serious accidents and environmental damage caused by fuel spills.
