President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for the construction of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park and commercial complex at Terminal 3 of the Accra International Airport, as part of efforts to expand airport infrastructure and improve the passenger experience.
The major Accra airport development project will provide approximately 2,030 covered parking spaces, together with commercial, entertainment and hospitality facilities.
Mahama Targets Ghana as Leading Aviation Hub
President Mahama said the government’s vision extends beyond increasing passenger numbers, with a broader goal of positioning Ghana as a preferred travel destination, convenient transit point and competitive aviation hub in Africa.
He noted that passenger traffic at the airport has recorded significant growth, rising from approximately 1.8 million passengers in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025.
According to the President, the increase in passenger numbers highlights the urgent need for expanded and modern airport infrastructure in Ghana to meet growing demand.
New Airport Infrastructure to Improve Passenger Experience
The new multi-purpose facility is expected to ease parking challenges at Terminal 3 while creating additional commercial and hospitality opportunities within the airport environment.
The development forms part of a wider programme to modernise Ghana’s aviation infrastructure and strengthen connectivity between Ghana and other destinations across Africa and beyond.
President Mahama also stressed the importance of professionalism, discipline and courtesy in Ghana’s aviation sector, saying these standards are essential to providing travellers with a positive experience.
Airport Projects Funded Without Direct Government Financing
President Mahama disclosed that several ongoing and planned airport infrastructure projects are being financed from the balance sheets of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL).
The projects include:
- Construction of a new GCAA air traffic control tower.
- Refurbishment of Terminal 2.
- Development of the transfer concourse linking Terminals 2 and 3.
- Construction of the new Terminal 3 parking and commercial complex.
He said the projects are being undertaken without direct government funding, demonstrating the role of Ghana’s aviation institutions in financing major infrastructure development.
Ghana Strengthens Aviation and Airport Infrastructure
The Terminal 3 car park and commercial complex is expected to enhance convenience for passengers, increase commercial activity and support Ghana’s ambition to become a major aviation hub in Africa.
