The Government of Ghana has completed the evacuation of approximately 1,900 Ghanaians from South Africa following a recent wave of xenophobic attacks that raised concerns over the safety of Ghanaian nationals in the country.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa disclosed that the final group of evacuees has returned to Ghana, bringing the government-led evacuation exercise to a close.
In a Facebook post accompanied by photographs, the Minister said he personally welcomed the last batch of Ghanaian nationals evacuated from South Africa.
According to Mr Ablakwa, the second phase of the evacuation exercise covered 1,000 Ghanaians, increasing the total number of citizens brought back to Ghana to about 1,900.
He said the government also provided comprehensive reintegration support to the returnees, including financial assistance, transportation allowances, medical care, psychosocial support and free registration for health insurance.
The evacuees are also receiving employment assistance as part of efforts to support their reintegration into Ghanaian society.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Ghanaians Abroad
The Foreign Affairs Minister described the evacuation as a collective national effort and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting Ghanaian citizens living and working abroad.
He stressed that the safety and welfare of Ghanaians overseas remain a priority, assuring citizens that the government would not abandon them in dangerous situations.
Mr Ablakwa expressed appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership, as well as local partners who contributed to the humanitarian evacuation operation.
Four Ghanaians Died During Period
The Minister also acknowledged the deaths of four Ghanaians during the period, extending condolences to their families and offering prayers for those who lost their loved ones.
He said the government remains committed to supporting affected families while ensuring that the circumstances surrounding the situation are properly documented.
Foreign Ministry to Release Full Evacuation Report
Mr Ablakwa announced that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will present a comprehensive report on the evacuation exercise in the coming week.
The report is expected to provide details of the operation and account for the government’s actions and resources used during the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa.
The development highlights the government’s efforts to protect Ghanaians abroad, respond to threats against citizens and provide humanitarian assistance to nationals affected by insecurity and xenophobic attacks.
