The Ghana Police Service has foiled an alleged robbery operation targeting banks in Labone, Accra, resulting in the death of two suspected robbers, the arrest of another suspect and the escape of a fourth member of the alleged gang.

The police operation has also uncovered a suspected robbery syndicate allegedly involved in monitoring bank customers, breaking into vehicles and planning attacks on financial institutions across the Greater Accra and Tema metropolitan areas.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, disclosed the development during a press briefing in Accra.

According to the IGP, the Ghana Police Service began gathering intelligence on the suspected criminal group in April 2026 following complaints about individuals allegedly monitoring customers who visited various banks.

Suspected Robbers Allegedly Targeted Bank Customers

Mr Yohuno said investigations indicated that the suspects allegedly used master keys to gain access to vehicles belonging to bank customers.

In some cases, the alleged criminals reportedly targeted vehicle owners shortly after they had withdrawn money from banks before breaking into their vehicles.

The police also gathered intelligence suggesting that the suspected gang was preparing to carry out robbery attacks on selected banks.

Following the intelligence gathered, the office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP (SOA) was assigned to closely monitor the activities of the suspected robbery syndicate.

Suspected GH¢50,000 Bank Customer Robbery in Tema

The alleged criminal network has reportedly been linked to a number of robbery incidents involving bank customers.

According to the police, the group was allegedly involved in the robbery of GH¢50,000 from a woman at Agbamaame in Tema Community Two on May 17, 2026.

The incident reportedly occurred after the woman had withdrawn the money from a bank.

Police investigations further linked the suspects to another alleged robbery incident at Achimota in Accra.

On June 11, 2026, the suspects allegedly attacked a young man at gunpoint after he withdrew an undisclosed amount of money from a bank.

The latest police operation forms part of efforts by the Ghana Police Service to combat armed robbery, protect bank customers and strengthen security around financial institutions in Accra, Tema and other parts of the Greater Accra Region.

The police have continued investigations into the suspected robbery syndicate as efforts are made to apprehend the remaining suspect who reportedly fled during the operation.
