The Pru East Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Kwabena Donkor, has expressed alarm over a possible food crisis in Ghana in 2024 as a result of the flooding of towns along the Volta Lake.
The lake’s banks were breached during this floods as a result of an extreme water intake.
Dr. Donkor underscored the seriousness of the flooding in an interview with Eyewitness News on Citi FM, noting that it had swamped entire communities, including vital infrastructure like hospitals and schools.
He emphasized the difficulties caused by the flooding in the fields of education, medicine, and public health. Due to flooding, the schools in his district had to close.
Dr. Donkor further emphasized that the flooding of farmlands in the Pru, Oti, Bono East, Savannah, and Northern regions had worsened the problem.
He claimed that since the flooded crops did not survive, this could result in a serious food shortage and food insecurity in the following year (2024).
He stated that these areas had already been flooded in June and July 2023, but that little media attention had been given to the issue.
Flood victims have only gotten collective aid thus far.
Over 2,500 people were left homeless as a result of the flooding, which hit nine settlements in the Pru East District of the Bono East Region.
Kobre Nsuano, Pentecost Nsuano, Adiembra, Fanteakura, Tokobikope, Tonka, Agokope, and Logakope were among the communities that were most negatively damaged.
