Aquaculture production has advanced significantly, according to the Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson, with an increase in output from 25,350 tons in 2019 to 132,652 tons in 2022.
Although there has been improvement, she claims that issues including high feed costs, disease outbreaks, and technology constraints still exist, highlighting the necessity of broad interventions throughout the aquaculture value chain.
The sector minister disclosed these during a “One Health Aquaculture” workshop in Accra. The speech was read on her behalf by Ms. Mariam Kpakpah, the Chief Director of the Ministry.
She explained that the two-day workshop is taking place in Accra at the right time, right before Ghana is set to implement the Ghana National Aquaculture Development Plan (2024–2028), which aims to improve the management, practice, and sustainable growth of agriculture as a profitable industry in Ghana.
The goal of the workshop is to adopt cooperative techniques to enhance safe and sustainable aquaculture production in Ghana and to examine the use of one health framework to combine important issues in animal, environmental, and human health.
