In spite of the country’s continued power problems, Ghana’s Energy Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has stated that the country is not currently experiencing “dumsor,” or irregular power supply. This defies the need for a load-shedding schedule.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh asserted that the state of affairs under the current administration is noticeably better than what was observed in 2015 during the administration of former President John Mahama, and that the administration’s handling of the energy sector is substantially better than that of its predecessor.

“If you are comparing four years, four years, NPP administration is 300 times better than John Mahama,” the Energy Minister declared emphatically, highlighting the comparison between the NPP and NDC administrations over their respective four-year tenure.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh explained, “Nobody has said we haven’t [experienced dumsor]; I am just saying it is far much better than John Mahama ever did.” He acknowledged the presence of an intermittent power supply issue.

In order to help businesses with efficient operational planning, the Public Utility Regulatory Commission (PURC) had pushed for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to create and distribute a load-shedding schedule.

Dr. Opoku Prempeh, however, disagreed with this statement and urged those who support the timeline to take the initiative themselves.
