Ghana’s population of 33 million is predicted to increase to 52.47 million by 2050, according to recent demographic forecasts released by the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS).
Released on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, the GSS’s Population Projection for 2021–2050 study includes the specific numbers.
The analysis projects that by 2050, Ghana’s population will have increased from 33,007,618 in 2024 to 52,470,000.
With a consistent annual growth rate, this is a notable increase over the 30,832,019 population in 2021.
Between 2021 and 2030, there will be an average annual population increase of 711,706 individuals.
Professor Samuel Kobina Annim, the government statistician, emphasized the significance of these estimates when the report was released.
Important regional growth trends are revealed in the research. By 2050, the populations of the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions are projected to surpass 7.5 million apiece.
Professor Annim emphasised the significance of addressing long-term demographic shifts by saying, “These projections emphasise the need for renewed conversations around the age of retirement,”
Furthermore, the populations of the Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions are expected to double by 2050, indicating the highest growth rates.
“The population in Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions will surpass 7.5 million each by 2050, while Northern, North East, and Savannah Regions will see their populations double,”
“The latest projections highlight the pressing need for strategic planning to accommodate future population increases and to manage the associated economic and social challenges.” Professor Annim explained.
