Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer of the National Progressive Party, has declared that kidney dialysis will be free nationwide starting on December 1, 2024, as part of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
This follows the successful implementation of a pilot program that provided free renal dialysis to individuals under the age of 18 and those 60 and over.
“So, many people have kidney problems and need dialysis but this dialysis is so expensive that many people cannot afford…So, 6 months ago, we started a pilot programme to bring [down] the cost of dialysis under the National Health Insurance. So persons over 60 and under 18, for the last six months, had dialysis under National Health Insurance for free,” he said this when he addressed stakeholders at Suame as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region on November 10.
“We are bringing the pilot to an end, so, from December 1, 2024, all kidney dialysis patients will have the dialysis free under the National Health Insurance Scheme”, Dr. Bawumia said.
