On Wednesday, December 4, 2024, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo officially opened three (3) new district hospitals in the country’s eastern region, each with 40 beds.
These three new additions, which are situated in the Okere District, Jumapo in the New Juaben North Municipality, and Kwabeng in the Atiwa West District, join the four hospitals in the Ashanti region that were already put into service late last month. There are now twelve 40-bed hospitals in the Ashanti, Eastern, Greater Accra region, as well as one polyclinic at Mim in the Brong Ahafo region.
In 2020, former Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu laid the foundation for VAMED Engineering GmbH of Austria to start construction on these hospital projects.
These hospitals have also been constructed in Drobonso, Twedie, Sabronum, Suame, Manso Nkwanta, Nkwatia, Achiase, Mim, and Kpone Katamanso, among other locations throughout the nation.
Erste Group Bank AG and Česká Spořitelna a.s. provided a €71,500,000 facility for the construction and furnishing of these 40-bed hospitals. Additionally, each facility comprises 12 units of 2-bedroom semi-detached housing for hospital staff.

In addition to the residential accommodations for hospital employees, the hospitals have two offices for public health officers, a waiting room for 36 people, three prenatal consultation rooms, a counseling room, and an outpatient department with the necessary consultation rooms.
A surgical suite, an eight-bed pediatric ward, an eight-bed male ward, an eight-bed female ward, four labor delivery stations, an eight-bed maternity ward, a four-bed lying-in, and a two-bed recovery room are all included in the theater.
In order to fulfill the government’s pledge to improve the health of all citizens of the nation by enhancing the infrastructure for health care, President Akufo-Addo asked the personnel and residents of the areas to make sure that the facilities are properly managed and maintained.
The Ashanti region has four district hospitals: Suame in the Suame Municipal Municipality; Twedie in the Atwima Kwanwoma District; Sabronum in the Ahafo Ano South East District; and Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains District. In the Amansie West District, the district hospital in Manso Nkwanta is likewise finished but has not yet been put into service.
